The house on the southwest corner of 14th & Nebraska has been vacated since a friend moved his mother-inlaw out of there fifty years ago. His question to me was why is it still standing? Is the city taking care of it? It looks like it has been empty all this time. Any ideas ?

Yes, I know which house you are talking about. It's somewhat shielded from the roadway by big trees-it's a huge place, is that right?

The house is probably on a list of thousands. In another 50yrs, they will get to it.

Be patient. Whitewashing poverty takes time, retired1.

That entire area - Nebraska to Boots Creek - South of 14th is owned by the same family & the house you refer to is being maintained for a family that has been planning to move into it from another state - for at least 40+ years.
There is nothing wrong with that house - it is maintained - is up to code and has been so kept.
If someone chooses to own and maintain a property and not move into it - whose business is it to take it?
The entire property is maintained, mowed, etc.

Thanks for that update bhenry. You are right about it being maintained, at least on the outside. I have never seen the lawn in need of mowing. Still, a house not lived in for such a long time would have problems with it I would think. No matter. Glad to know the city has bigger fish to fry. Anyway, I was under the impression that the city tears down houses in order of each enemy, worst to least.

The house on the hill behind the pine trees? I've always wanted to buy that house. The taxes have always been paid and it has never been listed for sale.
